\\#8 Heartbreaker;

I wonder if he shaves his pits...
Liz is jealous, Jessica is scheming, and DeeDee wins third place in a surfing championship after only a few weeks of surfing lessons!

Rated: 4 out of 5 stars

Plot: Jessica has her sights set on making Bill Chase miserable because he did the unthinkable! He turned her down for a date! Oh my god. The world is coming to an end. Now she must make him pay. DeeDee also has her sights set on Bill, but takes the subtle approach by having him teach her how to surf. And the Liz and Todd action is centered on throwaway character Patsy Webber, Todd’s old girlfriend freshly back from Paris and even more fabulous than the twins. Oh my!

Most Exciting Scene: Bill growing a pair and standing up to Jessica. Go Bill!

Most Frustrating Scene: Liz’s whining over Todd and Patsy. Instead of *asking* him about it, she just assumed they were in love and made a mess of herself. Remember kids, when you assume, you make an ass out of you and me. Liz certainly made an ass out of herself. Poor Todd’s going to spend a lot of time in therapy as he gets older.

Most Upsetting Scene: Jessica being a bitch to Bill. Oh wait, that was the whole book. Silly me. Then let’s go with poor Roger being made a fool of at Fowler Crest when Lila shouted she wouldn’t dance with him if he were the last boy in the world. Sort of reminds me of the time I screamed at Ricky in the cafeteria that I didn’t remember how to do it and the kids a few tables down started changing "Jer-ry! Jer-ry!" It was embarrassing all the same. ^_^

Most Entertaining Scene: Jessica being all upset because she’s not the one Mr. Hollywood Agent Gordon picked to do screen tests. And then being passed over by Bill for DeeDee and by Tom for Patsy. Sometimes bad things *do* happen to bad people!

Most Ridiculous Scene: The fact that Bill was actually chosen for screen tests and the like. Is it ever mentioned again after this book?

Favorite Character in the Book: Roger. Those Patman boys. *swoon*

Least Favorite Character in the Book: Liz. She’s annoying. She actually annoys me worse than Jessica in this book. It’s not so much that she just won’t talk to Todd and hears what he has to say, it’s that she does that and then talks to everyone else about it and expects pity.

Additional comments: This is the first book that really takes us away from the twins and I like that. If it hadn’t been for that fact this would’ve only received 3 stars. Though Bill is stoic, DeeDee is a very sympathetic character and I found her easy to relate to and made it much more bearable to get through the book.

One complaint I have though is the last book ended on quite the cliffhanger. I wanted tearful emotional scene when everyone realized Liz was back to her old self! But no! Other than a brief paragraph describing the prior book in vague detail there’s no mention of it! You’d think Todd would be the possessive one considering how close he came to losing her, and how Jessica vowed to be a better person and take advantage of her isn’t even a thought. Well, continuity isn’t exactly SVH’s strongpoint. *le sigh* I was a little annoyed that DeeDee got so good at surfing in only a few weeks but hey, don’t they all? I also wanted to see Liz jab a clever quip at Bruce’s brutal nature and have him run off all embarrassed.

In another subplot we learn the shocking development that Roger has to work as a janitor to support his family and of course Liz learns of this and turns meaningful eye contact in his direction. It’s made well known that he has a crush on Lila. What will happen in this next book? Will Lila give Roger a chance? As if there is a question?

And just for shits and giggles, doesn’t Bill Chase bare a striking resemblance to Flash Gordon? I guess that’s where’s his movie career went. ^_^
