\\#9 Racing Hearts;
Olivia pines, Roger runs, and Jessica gets responsible!
Rated: 3.9 out of 5 stars
Plot: Roger’s a great runner, but he’s dirt poor and his mother’s really ill, so he has to work like a kid in a sweat shop to pay the bills. He runs in the trials for the Bart because the girl he likes guiles him into it and spend the rest of the book angsting about what everyone will think when they find out he’s poor and can’t run because of his job. Olivia has a crush on him and turns a sympathetic ear to all his woes. Jessica’s sick of no one taking her seriously and decides to be a lawyer. After half a day of work, she decides it’s too much, you know, *work*, and prepares to quit until she meets that cute guy who works across the hall. And of course, Liz saves the day.
Most Exciting Scene: The race. Especially when Bruce trips.
Most Frustrating Scene: Lila being a snob when Roger confesses to her about everything.
Most Upsetting Scene: Jessica planning exactly where and when she would decide to unveil Roger’s secret just to humiliate her so-called best friend. I don’t wonder at all why Lila dumped her in SY. She’s such a callous bitch.
Most Entertaining Scene: When Roger has lunch with the A-list crowd and Lila makes Bruce say hello to her "friend." *snicker snicker*
Most Ridiculous Scene: Jessica not going out with a boy she "really liked" because he didn’t drive. I don’t think she cared that he was younger than her, just that he didn’t drive. And then, being so upset about this boy she "really liked" she found a date to the Bart dance in two seconds.
Favorite Character in the Book: Roger. He’s so cute in his poor awkwardness. I love how he tells Lila what he’s doing before the dance is none of her business! ^_^
Least Favorite Character in the Book: Jessica. She….do I need to go on?
Additional comments: Well this was a fun one. It focuses on Roger, a poor boy who’s down to earth and a little more real from the rest of the prep squad. I liked how he snubbed Lila. ^_^ Jessica’s whole side plot with the wanting to be a lawyer thing…..then hanging on to the job just long enough to try to snag a guy, whom she runs away from as soon as she finds out he’s only fifteen and can’t drive. If memory serves correct, she wasn’t so forthcoming with her age, either, as she was trying to lead him to believe she was in college. Bah.
And a nice little quote to end it on;
Liz: "I know Jessica saw you last night. I wanted to let you know that I spoke to her and that she’s promised not to say a word about you."
Roger: "Can you trust her?"
Liz: "She’s my sister. When she gives her word to me, she means it."
Um…excuse me, Liz. *coughcough*bullshit*coughcough* What? I didn’t say anything.

Stupid Trivia
- Aaron and Lila dated in Jr. High
- The last time someone from SVH had won the Bart was in 1956 with Jack Ralston
- Mr. Pendergast, the head of the cleaning crew at Mr. Wakefield’s office building, went to school with Jack Ralston.
- Roger’s mother had a heart ailment that made her have to retire from the assembly line at one of the Patman factories. *forshadowing alert!!!*
Dated Mentionables:
- The TV Show, Hill Street Blues
- They’re having the 31st running of the Bart. We know it was run in 1956. Taking that, the latest the book could’ve taken place was 1987. I’m guessing they’ll have to change it if they want to make it "current."
