\\#7 Boy Meets Girl
Jeremy and the Quest for the Perfect Date with Jessica
Jeremy spends Sunday afternoon thinking up the perfect cheap date for Jessica because he's dirt poor and comes up with taking her to a theatre which he has to trade his autographed Steve Young card to get. Then he calls her up and asks her out, she says yes and they flirt.
Jess goes to school on Monday and everybody is talking about Melissa. Enid [Anyone remember her? Liz's so-called best friend?] makes a cameo and comes up to Jess, talking about Melissa. She says that Melissa will be released in a few days and come back to school in less than a month. Jessica's relieved and sneaks away before Enid can bother her for juicy details.
Jeremy can't figure out where to take Jess for dinner before their date. He gets into talking to his dad, who advises him to take her one a picnic, and gets up and to prepare their meal, getting all excited for the first time in a long time.
Jessica is anxious about her date Monday night. She frets over what to wear. She spends a long time fretting. Her mother informs her that Jeremy called and he wants her to meet him at 2007 Isabelle Avenue. Jess goes. She arrives at the place and it turns out to be Fantasy Island Fun House. She is perplexed.
Meanwhile Jeremy is wondering where Jessica is because she's thirty-five minutes late. Jeremy calls Alice to find out what happened to her. Alice informs him that she told Jessica to meet Jeremy on Isabelle Avenue and Jeremy tells her it was Isabelle Court. He swings by to pick her up and they straighten up the mix-up and have a little laugh about it and go to eat and play games in the arcade.
All too soon their magical evening is almost over and they go out to the cars. They talk in funny accents and look into each others eyes and are about to kiss when a little kid starts screaming that he doesn't want to go home [Who takes their kid to an arcade till ten on a school night? Really?], interrupting their moment. They say bye and Jeremy watches her car till she's out of sight.
The next day at cheerleading practice Gina and Cherie start in on Jessica. Jessica, thinking they're up to their usual shenanigans (Cherie and Gina getting equal screen time for once), finally gets a backbone and says something back. Then she realizes that it runs much deeper than her affair, they think that she was responsible for Melissa attempting suicide. Jessica snaps, saying how she didn't know Will and Melissa were a couple and that if Cherie and Gina were more friends to Melissa than followers they would've realized how miserable she was. Laufeld comes in with perfect timing, interrupting things before they got too ugly and Jessica goes to the bathroom. There she tries to suppress what has just happened by concentrating on Jeremy, but she finds herself only able to think about Will. [I have a theory for this forming, and from now on I'll put them in the reviews rather than the summaries. I already put too much of my biased opinions in these things.]
At Jeremy's practice his coach comes up to him and tells him about his dad and gives him a little pep-talk about how he'll come through it. He succeeds in doing nothing more than making Jeremy feel worse. But Jeremy has his date with Jessica to look forward to.
Jessica frets over what to wear once again that night. She ends up wearing a black dress and putting her hair in those ball things [which look really stupid in my opinion]. Jeremy comes to pick her up, complete with a speck of mud on his cheek and she wipes it off for him. They flirt and get into traffic and talk about each others days and wind up fifteen minutes late for the comedy show. Then they find out that you have to be twenty-one to get in and they go for ice cream.
At the ice cream parlor she can't help thinking about Melissa and is a little edgy, which is making Jeremy concerned. Then just as they're about to get ice cream, she sees Will. He tells her he's getting ice cream for Melissa. Jessica goes to introduce him and Jeremy and finds out that they know each other. Will's rather curt and abrupt and she's left thinking he blames her for Melissa, too.
Jessica feels really bad the next morning because of how she acted the night before. She calls up Jeremy and apologizes and invites him over for dinner that night. All the Fowlers have something to do so none of them will be there. Jessica is nervous and her and Liz talk about it. We learned the Jessica and Tia tried out for the play that afternoon. They go home to work on dinner.
Jessica winds up having the Fowlers servants cook while she supervises and gets ready. She's freaking out because she's nervous, and Liz makes a point to mention that she's acting like her old self again. Jess is kind of happy to hear that.
Unfortunately for Jeremy his mom finds out she has to work at the last minute, so he can't go have dinner with the Wakefields. He's rather upset, but calls Jessica and tells her, and they make plans for Friday.
On Friday everything goes fine. They have the perfect dinner and the perfect walk on the boardwalk looking at the stars and making out. Yeah. Moving on…
Maria: Betrayed and Brokenhearted
Maria is sitting on her bed looking at her college catalogues and things trying to get her mind off Liz and Conner when Liz calls to apologize and goes on and on to the answering machine, making Maria sink deeper and deeper into a well of self-pity. She finally hangs up and Maria let's herself breath again. [It mentions that she has a sleigh bed. Do you have any idea how expensive those things are?]
The next day in drama class is an interesting scene. Maria and Aaron Dallas are playing Freeze Frame acting out a scene from Star Trek. [Note: It says Aaron Dallas is a blond. For some reason I've thought he was a brunette all these years. You think you know a guy…] Renee calls freeze and comes up and starts a scene from Titanic. [She has a line! But still no physical description.] After class is over and they're all done embarrassing themselves Tia comes up to Maria and asks her if she's going to try out for the play. She says she doesn't think so and Jessica joins them. Naturally, since Tia's Conner's best friend and Jessica's Liz's twin sister, Maria doesn't want to be around them, so she gets snappy with Tia and leaves.
Maria tries to hold it together at the Oracle meeting Thursday afternoon. She's spent the last few days being cold and distant and it's taking its toll on her. She asks for suggestions for the next issue and people want to do it on Melissa's suicide attempt. She gets mad because it's personal business and gives a little speech about it. Liz and Megan come back from the printers just in time to overhear it.
Later that day Maria meets Ken at HOJ and they talk about the Liz situation. She realizes how immature she's been acting and Ken makes her promise that she'll hear Liz out. [Love is in the air… just think about that commercial with the bunnies.] Maria also mentions that Ken is the only person she trusts.
Will and Melissa: "All I wanna do is break up with you..."
Will goes in to see Melissa in the hospital. (She's in room 314) He goes in, see her lying there unconscious, thinks about all the crazy stuff that's happened, trying to contain his anger at her. [I love how they phrase his cheating on her as "His inability to resist Jessica Wakefield."] After a few minutes he leaves, quickly kissing her on the forehead.
After running into Jessica at the ice cream place he goes to visit Melissa, who is looking much better and is very happy to see him. She chats away like things are just like they used to be and Will wants to inform her that things aren't going to be, but is interrupted by the nurse coming in to change her IV. He then thinks better of it and feeds her ice cream because she can't move her hand because of the IV.
Melissa gives Will a call the next day, which he tries not to answer but does in the end. She's getting out the next day and encourages him to visit her after practice. Will cuts the conversation short by say that his dad's expecting a call. He decides he definitely has to break things off with her and can't put it off any longer.
Will goes to see Melissa at home. Before he goes up to her room Mrs. Fox stops him and gives him a little talk about how she's happy Will is still there for her and how Melissa needs someone to be there for her and that Liss has to have intensive therapy. Will tells her he can't be Melissa's boyfriend any longer and goes upstairs to give his girl the news himself. He gets up there and Melissa throws herself at him. He says he wants to talk.
He tells her they're not back together and that she has to learn to stop using his as a crutch. Then she punches him and yells "You lying, cheating bastard!" She starts screaming and throwing things at him and he says helpfully, "You really should give counseling a try, Liss." She throws a picture of him at him and he scrambles out of there, his face burning, but feeling better than he has in weeks. [I love this scene. ^_^]
After he leaves Melissa's he heads to Fowler Crest to apologize to Jessica. He finds her after her date with Jeremy and he says he's sorry and asks if someday maybe he could be a friend. She's says it's possible and smiles a bit. [The fireworks. The fireworks.]
The Liz and Conner Saga: The Calm Before the Storm
Liz spends Sunday afternoon looking into the mirror wondering who is this person staring back at her. She had done a complete 180 in the last few weeks since school started. Just as she gets to thinking about the Maria situation and feeling sick and guilty Conner comes and makes a proposal: he'll back off while she works things out with Maria. She doesn't want to [My theory is she finds Maria annoying, too, she's just friends with her because they've been friends for a while, and since Enid dropped her, Maria's the only one around dorky enough to make Liz look cool.] but agrees anyway. Conner seems relieved. [What is he doing this for? His sake or hers? Hmm…] Then she decides that the sooner she works things out with Maria, the sooner she can get to working things out with Conner. [I don't like Liz right now. I really don't.]
After a full day of Conner avoiding her, Liz musters up the courage to go up to Maria in the hall and apologizes. Maria tells her to forget about it, that she's through with Conner. This catches Liz by surprise and Liz gets the feeling that Maria's actually saying that she's through with her.
Liz gets home from partying with Andy, Tia, and Angel at the Riot, making noise to stir Conner into coming out and acknowledging her presence. She ends up stirring Mrs. Sandborn instead, whom she has a sober conversation with. Then she retreats to her room.
Liz tries to talk to Maria and take her out for coffee the next day but Maria is just not having it. Liz keeps trying pathetically, but Maria stands her ground. [Finally, she gets a backbone! I like her here.] This part's so good I have to quote it:
Maria: Look, I'll make this easy for you. You want my blessing to go after Conner? Fine. You have it. Don't waste time feeling guilty or trying to justify things to me--just go for it. But don't expect our friendship to continue.
Liz: You can't mean that. I'm sorry for what I've done. You've got to believe me.
Maria: That's all I'm going to say, Elizabeth. Why don't you get out of here? I'm sure Conner's waiting for you.
[That was cold, Maria. A few more backstabbing friends and broken hearts and I think you could've made it on Melrose Place.]
That night she and Jessica bond as Jessica gets ready for her date with Jeremy. Liz feels envious. The next day Liz goes over to the Fowlers for the big dinner with Jeremy. She reflects on how quiet it is at the Sandborns, and how much she misses her home. After a dinner with her family in which she stuffs herself in order to avoid her parents prying, she heads back to the Sandborns. As she's going up the stairs Conner comes out of his room and they have an abrupt conversation. She mentions she talked to Maria, and he says that Maria probably needs more time and heads out to meet Andy for pizza.
The next day Conner avoids her, Maria pretends she doesn't exist, but Megan, who is very excited that her first article has been published, asks her to go with her to the printers to pick it up and has Conner's car to go in. Liz says sure.
After they get back from the printers Liz hears Maria's integrity speech and knows it's about her and feels bad again. Megan asks her to take her to the Country Club to surprise her mother with her article. [Bad idea, Megan] Before they go Liz tries to talk to Maria again, but she's unsuccessful.
They get to the country club. Megan's very excited and they find Mrs. Sandborn laying out by the side of the pool. They try to wake her, but she seems deep in sleep. They finally get her awake, and it's very awkward as Megan realizes she's drunk and so does Liz. They lead her to the car. As Liz drives back, Megan leans against the window and doesn't say anything. Liz reflects on her weeks at the Sandborns and realizes that Mrs. Sandborn's an alcoholic, and that Conner constantly made excuses for her and didn't trust Liz enough to let her know, which makes her feel worse.
When they get home Liz and Megan work on dragging Mrs. Sandborn into the house. Conner comes running up, demanding to know what happened. He yells at Megan for surprising their mother and she runs into the house crying. Then he starts yelling at Liz because it's none of her business and has nothing to do with her. He then picks up Mrs. Sandborn and carries her into the house like a lil child.
Liz waits in the living room for Conner while he's helping his mother while she's throwing up. When he gets her settled he comes downstairs and takes out all his anger and frustration on Liz, and tells her to get out, that he doesn't want her here.
Liz wanders around after throwing a few things in her backpack and leaving. Jess pulls up ready to save the day. Megan had called her and told her the short version of what had happened. Liz is kind of happy to be back with her sister and her parents, but she can't help but wonder what's going to happen to Conner and Megan.
