Cain Christopher Hargreaves

The 17-year-old Earl of Cornwall with a tragic past. A child of incest, conceived through rape, he is damned by his family as being cursed. His father, Alexis, abused him mentally and physically, whipping his back every night to "atone for his original sin." His stepmother, Lenora, tried to kill him after she'd been poisoned, dying before his eyes. And his mother, Augusta, lunged to her death from the window of the mental hospital she was being kept at, after confusing him for his father. On that day he learned the truth behind his parentage and realized his father hated him and was trying to kill him. He poisoned his father, who, after cursing him that he would die all alone, also leaped to his apparent death from a castle window and into the sea below where he disappeared.

Cain is a highly intelligent and beautiful boy who is drowning in his life, surrounding himself with a makeshift family of those who care about him, what he never had as a child. He is quite the ladies man and has a dislike of the double standars of the upper class. He is not above murder and double crossing other people, but his intentions are usually good and set upon what is right. The only person he trusts completely is his servant, Riff, and will do whatever it takes to keep the butler at his side.

Riff Raffit

Riff was a promising medical student until the deaths of his entire family in a mysterious fire left him penniless. Alexis Hargreaves, being a friend of his fathers, hired Riff to be servant in his household, giving him strict orders to ignore Cain if he should see him. He ran into Cain the very day he arrived, a pitiful 12-year-old burying his pet bird in the yard. After the apparent death of Alexis, Riff vowed to never let anything hurt this child again.

Riff is quiet and stays to the background, helping Cain whenever the need arises, weather it's investigating in people's pasts, making him tea, digging up graves, or tying his shoes for him. He is completely commited to his lord, body and soul, and would do absolutely anything for Cain.

Merryweather Hargreaves

Merryweather was raised by her mother, Allegra Duke, on the streets of London and surrounding countrysides. They made their living as fortune tellers, on the run from Allergra's brutal ex-fiance. Merry was born out of wedlock, the love child of an affair Allegra engaged in while employed at Cornwall Castle. After Allegra's death Merry is left all alone, suspecting the Hargreaves as her mother's killers as she was poisoned by the special Hargreaves poison. In particualar she suspects Cain and tells him in his fortune that he will soon die. The man Allegra was running from turned out to be on the police and after he was killed Cain took Merry in as his half-sister, vowing that he would protect her for the rest of his life.

She's a precocious child, intelligent beyond her years due to her upbringing, and picks up on many things Cain would rather not have her involved in. She dislikes the way her brother keeps her locked up like a trove, but loves him enough she'll do what he wants, if it'll ease his suffering in the slightest.

Oscar Gabriel

The eldest child of Baron Gabriel who was disinherited from his family after he accidently caused the death of his fiance, who bore a striking resemblance to Cain. He cannot forgive himself for that act, only realizing he loved her when she was killed, and uses Emmeline Lauderdale to get close to the Hargreaves family. He proclaims his love for Merry and that he'll marry her when she gets older and vies for Cain's approval.

Oscar is a goof, but his heart is usually in the right place, if not his head. He's the closest thing Cain has to a friend and the two often go to parties and pick up women together. Afterwards they're both scolded by Merry.

Dominique Clehadol

A medium from France who was taken in the employment of Alexis Hargreaves at the Cromwell House. He was a noble, but his family was destitute, and his mother used him for money as a child, making him pretend he had psychic powers and forced him to perform for the rich. His mother killed herself in the bath, cursing him till her death. After she died he discovered he really did hold the ability to talk to the undead and gather information using a 6th sense. He has immense hatred of nobles and high society but loves money and will do almost anything if you pay him enough.

Clay frequents noble parties as a medium, using his ability along with parlor tricks to his advantage. Cain and Riff often use him as a source of information, particularly about Cain's father. He was offered a place in Delilah, but refused out of his dislike of working for anybody.

Neil Hargreaves

A cousin of Alexis and Augusta, he'd been in love with Augusta since yout. After Cain's birth he felt a deep connection to the helpless infant the rest of the family wanted to get rid of. After Alexis's disappearence he became Cain's guardian.

Neil is very protective and wants what's best for Cain, even if it's not what Cain wants, and will use blackmail if necessary.
